The estate runs its own Tea House in partnership with the Casa Velha do Palheiro hotel next door, open 10:00-17:00 for snacks and a light lunch, a full hour before the garden's own last entry. The Rustic Grotto
A stone grotto built around running water sits among the estate's oldest plantings, shaded and cool even on a hot Funchal afternoon. It is one of the estate's original 19th-century features, predating the more recent themed rooms, and its damp microclimate suits ferns and mosses that would not survive in the open sun elsewhere on the hillside. The stonework has never been restored into a polished feature the way a purpose-built visitor garden might rebuild it, so it still reads as a working piece of the estate's own history rather than a photo prop.
The Centennial Trees
The estate's specimen trees include a Brazilian Araucaria and California redwoods planted well over a century ago, now towering over the surrounding paths. These are among the reasons Palheiro reads as a mature private estate rather than a purpose-built visitor garden: the tree collection was assembled for the family's own enjoyment long before public entry existed, and the scale of the trunks shows it.
