Funchal Tours: All 36 Compared, With the Gate Price Beside Each
We list every tour and excursion from Funchal in a single table sorted by length, then put the official gate or do-it-yourself price next to each listed price so you can see exactly what the tour premium buys before you book.
Funchal tours on one table sorted by length, each with the platform's listed price beside the honest gate or DIY price for doing the same ground on your own. What the city holds is on the Funchal home page.
Quick answer Cheapest funchal tours from $18.84, and when the DIY route wins
The cheapest guided option in our comparison is the Funchal Old Town walking tour at $18.84, and the old town itself is free to walk on your own. The best value in the table is often the official gate price rather than any tour: the Monte cable car costs $25.21 (€22) return, the Monte toboggan runs $34.38 (€30) for one person, and city buses cost $2.35 (€2.05) a ride. Tours earn their price when they bundle transport a bus cannot match, such as a pre-dawn Pico do Arieiro transfer or a boat trip to the Desertas Islands, where no public alternative exists at all.
Key takeaways
- Every tour compared in one master table, sorted by length from 1 hour to 9 hours.
- Every row shows the platform's listed price beside the gate or DIY price for the same ground.
- City buses cost $2.35 (€2.05) a ride and reach many of the same stops the tuk-tuks visit.
- Where no public route exists, such as the Desertas Islands, the tour is the only way in.

On Foot: Old Town and Food

Which Tour, by the Time You Have
Match the tour to the hours you actually have. The table below picks one option per time slot and states the DIY alternative in every case.
Our Picks
These picks come straight from the master table above. Where the DIY alternative is cheaper and practical, we say so.
| Time You Have | Our Pick | Why | DIY Alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| About an hour | The Funchal 2-Hour Tuk-Tuk Tour with Cable Car Finale trimmed to its cable-car end, or the 1 hour Madeira Botanical Garden Tuk-Tuk Tour + Old Town | A seated loop with no navigation, plus the cable car ride itself | The Monte cable car alone costs $25.21 (€22) return, $18.34 (€16) one way, and the Botanical Garden is $11.46 (€10) entry plus a $2.35 (€2.05) bus ride |
| Half a day | The Nuns Valley, Monte and Sleigh Ride Tour at 4 hours, or the Monte Tropical Garden & Toboggan Ride by Tuk Tuk at 3 hours | It bundles the toboggan and the garden, both of which are a faff to book separately, and the sledge ride ends in Livramento, away from where you started | Cable car to Monte plus the toboggan at the rank costs from $34.38 (€30) for one rider, and Monte Palace entry is $20.63 (€18) |
| A full day | The West Madeira Waterfalls and Fanal Forest Tour at 8 hours, or the Madeira East Tour: Pico Arieiro, Santana & Laurissilva at 7 hours | No single public route covers either circuit, and the driver does the mountain roads for you | A rental car is the only real alternative, and both Fanal and Pico do Arieiro are free to enter |
| An evening | The Madeira Food and Wine Walking Tour in Funchal, or the 4 hour Taste Funchal: Food, Wine and Cultural Tour | Eleven tastings and six drinks in one small-group walk, all arranged in advance | Taverns and the market can be visited alone, but the tastings are not sold as a set, so you build your own crawl bar by bar |
What a Tour Price Buys That the Gate Does Not
Four Things the Tour Premium Covers
Compare any row in the master table and the pattern repeats. A tour buys four things: a driver who handles the mountain roads, a guide who explains what you are looking at, hotel pickup that starts at your door, and a fixed plan that is booked before you arrive. The official gate price buys none of that. Monte Palace charges $20.63 (€18) for the garden, the museum and a Moscatel tasting, and nothing for the climb up to Monte.
The cable car charges $25.21 (€22) return for the ride, the toboggan charges from $34.38 (€30) for the sledge, and the Cabo Girão skywalk charges $5.73 (€5) through SIMplifica. Add those up for Monte yourself and you reach roughly $55.01 (€48) against the $126.34 charged by the Monte Tropical Garden & Toboggan Ride by Tuk Tuk. The $71 gap is the tuk-tuk, the driver-guide and the pickup.
When the Gap Is Worth Paying
Sometimes it is. On the Desertas Islands catamaran there is no public alternative at all, so the full price is the entry price. On the Pico do Arieiro sunrise hiking transfer no public bus reaches the trailhead before dawn, so the transfer fee buys something a timetable cannot.
Where a bus, a cable car or a ferry does the same job, the honest number sits in the last column of the table, and you can decide if a guide and a blanket are worth the difference.
If the Tour You Wanted Is Full

Three Fallbacks That Cost Less
Sold out does not mean stuck. First, ride the public network instead: city buses cost $2.35 (€2.05) a ride, buses 29, 30, 31 and 31A reach the Botanical Garden, buses 20, 21, 22 and 48 climb to Monte, and bus 81 reaches Curral das Freiras in about 54 minutes. Second, walk the old town self-guided, the streets are free and our Funchal old town page covers the route.
Third, book the DIY element directly: the Porto Santo ferry sells its own tickets, the Cabo Girão skywalk sells through SIMplifica for $5.73 (€5), and the Monte cable car and toboggan both sell on site. For whale watching, Rota dos Cetáceos charges $68.76 (€60) and Ventura do Mar $59.59 (€52) booking direct, which can be cheaper than a platform listing for the same water.
Where Funchal Tours Start
Most Funchal tours start in one of three zones: the old town and marina waterfront, the city centre around the Sé, or a hotel pickup that fans out across the island. Knowing the zone tells you how early to leave.
-
Funchal Old Town Walking Tour
The listed meeting point may vary depending on the option booked, so check your confirmation. The operator Madeiran Heritage runs fixed morning and afternoon departures.
Tip: Arrive ten minutes early. The old town lanes fill fast once the market opens.
-
Funchal Dolphin and Whale Watching Catamaran Cruise
Boards at the Seaborn Catamaran berth, Marina do Funchal, 9000-055 Funchal. No hotel pickup, you walk to the pontoon.
Tip: The marina is a flat walk from the old town along the waterfront. Allow time for the security gate at the pontoon.
-
Desertas Islands Full-Day Catamaran Trip
Departs from Funchal marina, no hotel pickup, with lunch served on board. It is the longest trip in our table at 9 hours.
Tip: Pack a layer. The crossing out is the coolest part of the day and the return is late.
-
Madeira Food and Wine Walking Tour in Funchal
Meets at the H&M store on Rua Dr. Brito Câmara, 9000-039 Funchal, a few minutes' walk from the cathedral square.
Tip: Come hungry. Eleven tastings and six drinks across the stops is a full meal.
-
H.M. Borges Winery Guided Tour with Wine Tasting
Meets at Rua 31 de Janeiro 83, 9050-401 Funchal, a short indoor visit with no transport involved.
Tip: This one runs rain or shine since it is indoors, which makes it a good bad-weather slot.
-
Porto Santo Island Highlights 4x4 Tour
Pickup and drop-off at your hotel or the cruise terminal in Porto Santo itself. Getting to Porto Santo by ferry or flight is separate and not included.
Tip: Book the ferry first, then the 4x4 around the ferry timetable, not the other way round.

Funchal Tours: Questions
Are Funchal tours cheaper booked on the day in person?
Not stated for the listings in our comparison, which all carry free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance. Booking ahead fixes your departure time and place, and several of the underlying attractions, such as the Monte toboggan, sell only same-day tickets on site, so the tour and the ticket follow different rules.
Do Funchal tuk-tuk tours include attraction entry?
Usually not. The City Highlights Tuk-Tuk Tour and the Botanical Garden tuk-tuk listings both state that attraction tickets are not included, so you pay the garden or museum entry separately. The Funchal 2-Hour Tuk-Tuk Tour with Cable Car Finale is the exception, since the cable car ride up is bundled in.
Is a Funchal walking tour worth it if the old town is free?
The Funchal Old Town walking tour costs $18.84 for 2 hours and adds a guide, entry to the Jesuits' College, a wine lodge visit and a sweet factory visit. Walking the same streets alone is free, so you are paying for the access and the commentary, not the ground.
Can I see whales from Funchal without a boat tour?
You can watch from the Ponta da Cruz or Garajau coastal viewpoints for free, but sightings are far less reliable than from a boat. No public boat covers the whale-watching routes. Booking direct with Rota dos Cetáceos at $68.76 (€60) or Ventura do Mar at $59.59 (€52) is the honest comparison point.
How do I get from the airport without a private transfer?
The Aerobus runs the airport to Praia Formosa route in about 50 minutes for $7.68 (€6.70) on board, or $5.55 prepaid on a GIRO card. A taxi is metered and no fixed airport fare exists in the official tariff, so be wary of any quoted flat rate. The private transfer in our table is $39.60.
What happens if the weather cancels my Funchal tour?
The catamaran listings state that if conditions are unsafe the trip is canceled and guests are offered an alternative or a full refund, and the Desertas trip carries the same policy. Most listings also allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund on your side.
