Funchal on Sunday: What Is Open and What Is Closed

Monte and the gardens

The Funchal cable car runs every Sunday, 08:45-17:45, one way $18.34 (€16.00) and return $25.21 (€22.00). At the top, both gardens open. Monte Palace Tropical Garden takes the last entry at 17:00 and charges $20.63 (€18.00), closing only on 25 December. The Madeira Botanical Garden opens 09:00-18:00 for $11.46 (€10.00).

A second cable car links the two gardens daily 09:00-17:00. The one Sunday casualty on the hill is the toboggan ride, which is closed every Sunday and public holiday, so plan the descent by cable car or bus instead.

Wine, cathedral and old town

Blandy's Wine Lodge opens Sunday in two blocks, 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00, with tours from $19.48 (€17.00). Book around the midday gap. The Sé cathedral opens 07:15-12:00 and 16:00-19:00 on Sunday, with no entry fee published.

The Madeira Story Centre runs daily 09:00-19:00, which makes the old town a solid Sunday base. Food is its own question on Sundays, so see where to eat. The lodge dates its Sunday hours the same way every week of the year, so a Sunday tasting needs no special booking beyond the usual reservation.

The cathedral's shorter Sunday window reflects services rather than a tourist schedule, so time a visit around the midday and evening gaps rather than the weekday hours.

Beaches and bathing

No source lists a Sunday-specific closure for the Lido, Ponta Gorda, Barreirinha or Doca do Cavacas bathing complexes, entry $6.88 (€6.00), or for the free beaches Praia Formosa and Praia de São Tiago. They are the straightforward Sunday afternoon option when the museums are shut. That absence of a published Sunday rule is itself useful information: unlike the museums and the market, nothing in the official tariff singles Sunday out as different, so the normal posted hours for each complex are the ones to use.

The shops question

No Madeira-specific official regulation on Sunday or holiday shop opening hours was found in our research. General Portugal-wide guidance says retail generally runs 06:00-24:00 with shopping centres open daily except 1 January and 25 December, but that guidance is not confirmed to apply identically in Madeira. We will not guess shop hours.

Assume individual shops vary and check the shop itself. Practically, that means a Sunday shopping plan has to be improvised on the day rather than read off a table the way the sights above allow.

Two sources, two answers

The Fortress of São Tiago on the old town's waterfront has a documented two-source conflict. One official source describes the interior as free, the other gives a €3 fee. Their weekly schedules also differ.

Because the sources disagree on both the hours and the price, we print neither figure. The fact and the consequence are simple: you cannot rely on published interior hours for a Sunday visit, so treat any interior plan as tentative.

What is certain

The exterior and grounds are free every day of the week, Sunday included. That makes the fort's walls and views a safe stop on any Sunday walk through the old town, even if the museum inside stays a question mark. Our full write-up lives at São Tiago fort.

Morning on the hill

Start early at the cable car, which opens 08:45. Ride up to Monte and walk Monte Palace Tropical Garden before the last-entry pressure builds. Cross on the second cable car or by foot to the Botanical Garden, open until 18:00.

Remember the toboggan will not be running, so the cable car or bus 20, 21, 22 or 48 is your way down. Getting around the rest of the day is covered in getting around.

Midday in the centre

The cathedral closes at 12:00 and Blandy's Wine Lodge pauses between 13:00 and 14:00 on Sunday. Eat in that window. The farmers' market is closed, so pick a restaurant from where to eat rather than planning on market stalls.

The Funchal Old Town Walking Tour runs on Sundays too and makes good use of these hours. This is also the window to buy any souvenirs from a shop rather than the market, since the Mercado stalls will not reopen until Monday morning.

Afternoon wine and sea

From 14:00, take a tour at Blandy's Wine Lodge from $19.48 (€17.00), then catch the cathedral's second opening at 16:00. Finish at a bathing complex or a free beach, none of which list a Sunday closure. Either the swim or the second wine sitting closes the day comfortably before the sights that do keep Sunday hours start winding down toward evening.
