The old town sits at the east end of the central waterfront around GPS 32.648, -16.902. The cable car lower station is here, giving you the 18-minute ride up to Monte without any bus transfer. The Mercado dos Lavradores is in this area, open Monday to Friday 07:00-19:00 and Saturday 07:00-14:00, closed Sundays. The Aerobus from the airport stops at the Mercado 22 minutes after departure, so you can land and be here without a taxi. The centre is anchored on Praça do Município and the Sé cathedral, which opens Sunday 07:15-12:00 and 16:00-19:00. Avenida do Mar on the waterfront below is an Aerobus stop at 24 minutes from the airport, so arrival is straightforward without a taxi. Taxi ranks have existed at the main squares including Praça do Município, though municipal notices show temporary relocations, so treat any fixed rank list with care. City buses toward Monte, numbered 20, 21, 22 and 48, climb from the central streets.

The Aerobus calls at Estrada Monumental/Lido between 35 and 38 minutes after leaving the airport, which makes this the middle option of the four for arrival time. The Fórum Madeira stop follows at 42 minutes, marking the zone's western edge. This is the far west end of Funchal's visitor strip, where the promenade ends at Praia Formosa beach. The Aerobus terminates here after a 50-minute run from the airport, the longest transfer of the four areas, but it is a direct ride with no change. Buses on this stretch also serve the hop-on hop-off sightseeing circuits that run west toward Câmara de Lobos and Cabo Girão. The Tourist Tax on Top
Whatever rate you find, Funchal adds its own municipal tourist tax. It applies to all paid overnight stays in tourist enterprises and Alojamento Local within the municipality, regardless of booking channel.
What you will pay
The tax is $2.29 (€2.00) per person per night, capped at 7 consecutive nights. That means a maximum of $16.04 (€14.00) per person per uninterrupted stay. It has been in force since 1 October 2024 and extends to cruise passengers since 1 January 2025.
Free stays are exempt, and so are children aged 12 and under, guests with a certified disability of 60% or more and residents of Madeira. This is Funchal's own rate. Other municipalities run separate schemes, including Câmara de Lobos and Santa Cruz with its Ecotaxa, so a night outside the city is taxed differently.

The public registers
Madeira hotels, aparthotels, rural tourism properties and the Madeira-specific Quintas da Madeira run under Decreto Legislativo Regional n.º 12/2009/M, adapting national Decreto-Lei n.º 39/2008, as amended by DLR 19/2017/M. Stars run on the same national 1 to 5 scale. Madeira adds no separate regional scale, only the Quintas da Madeira typology layered on top. Any registration can be verified for free at rnt.turismodeportugal.pt.
Use the Pesquisa_ET.aspx search for classified hotels and Pesquisa_AL.aspx for Alojamento Local rentals. You can search by name, address, type or municipality. If a listing cannot be found in either register, ask the host why before you pay.

No. Monte is one of Funchal's five official visitor areas, anchored on Largo das Babosas, but it is a day-trip hill. Treat it as an excursion reached by the 18-minute cable car from the old town, not as a base.
