Funchal To Pico Do Arieiro: Bus, Tours And The PR1 Trail

Two departures a day, every day including weekends and holidays, with no service on 25 December. On the summer timetable, 29 March through 24 October 2026, the final return runs at 19:00. On the winter timetable, 25 October 2026 through 27 March 2027, that return moves earlier, to 18:00.

Between the two main runs the operator also runs a shuttle between the Serras de Santo António forest path and the Pico do Arieiro roundabout, useful if you are walking that stretch rather than the full summit road.

Booking A Seat

The bus seats 31 with standing room besides, and the fare, $3.44 (€3.00) per journey, is paid on board only, there is no online ticket. If you want the 06:00 departure guaranteed rather than hoping for a free seat, phone 291 705 555 between 7 and 2 business days before travel, Monday to Thursday 08:30-12:30 and 14:00-18:00, Friday 08:30-12:30 and 14:00-17:00. Reservations are only honoured at the two origin stops, the Teleférico stop or Pico do Arieiro itself, and you must be at the stop 15 minutes early or the reservation is not guaranteed.

The operator can cancel the service for weather or a road closure, which matters most for a sunrise departure timed months in advance.

No taxi fare and no official drive time or distance from Funchal to Pico do Arieiro are published in the sources checked for this page, so neither figure is quoted here. What two of the tour listings do state, as part of describing their own service, is that the viewpoint and its parking are free once you arrive, which at least settles the cost of stopping the car. If you are driving yourself for sunrise, the practical planning point is the same one the bus reservation rule points at: arrive early, since the small car park and the bus stop share the same summit approach.

The One-Way Rule

PR1 has been open every day of the week since 26 June 2026 (before that, Friday to Sunday only), but it is walked in one direction only, Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, a rule set by IFCN after a rockfall on the trail. IFCN does not arrange a return to Pico do Arieiro. If you walk the full route, you exit at the other end, via PR1.1 Vereda da Ilha or PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo at Achada do Teixeira, and you arrange your own transport from there.

This is a different logistics problem from the round-trip official bus described above, and the two should not be confused.

Booking And Fees

Booking on SIMplifica is mandatory. The full PR1 costs $12.03 (€10.50), which also covers PR1.1, PR1.2 and PR1.3 without a separate fee. A shorter two-way ticket exists too: Pico do Arieiro to the Pedra Rija viewpoint and back on the same path costs $5.16 (€4.50) and needs no one-way exit plan, since you return the way you came. Closures To Check Before You Book

The Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo section was closed 14-17 and 21-22 September 2026 for boardwalk works, while the Areeiro to Pedra Rija stretch stayed open throughout. IFCN posts these closures as dated notices on its own site rather than on a fixed annual calendar, the same way it announced the one-way rule itself after the rockfall described above, so the register is the only place that reflects a change made last week rather than last year. Check the IFCN trail register for your travel date before booking a SIMplifica slot, since a closure on the day you picked means the full one-way route is not walkable even though the summit viewpoint itself remains open.

Booking the slot first and checking the register second is the avoidable mistake on this page, since the two short boardwalk closures listed above show how easily a single stretch can go dark for a few days without warning.

The Bus, For The Cheapest Sunrise

Take the 06:00 official bus for $3.44 (€3.00), reserved by phone if you want the seat guaranteed, and catch the 12:15 return. This is the cheapest way to see the sunrise by a wide margin, and it needs no rental car. The trade-off is the fixed schedule: miss the 06:00 departure and the next run is 13:30, which misses sunrise entirely, so arrive at the stop with margin to spare rather than cutting it close on an unfamiliar street.

The Sunrise Tour, For No Planning At All

The Madeira Pico do Arieiro Sunrise Tour at $40.20 collects you from your hotel before dawn and brings you back, viewpoint only, no hike. Not suitable for children under 5 per the listing. It suits a traveller who wants the sunrise handled door to door without reserving a bus seat by phone or driving before dawn, and who has no interest in continuing onto the PR1 trail afterwards.

Booking includes free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, so a change of weather forecast the night before costs nothing to cancel.

The Hiking Transfer, For Walking PR1 One Way

The Funchal Pico do Arieiro Sunrise Hiking Transfer at $56.28 solves exactly the one-way problem described above: it drops you at the trailhead for sunrise and picks you up later at Achada do Teixeira, once you have walked PR1 to Pico Ruivo and out. Expect a strenuous, exposed ridge hike once the transfer ends, and check the operator's own health notes about vertigo and mobility. This is the option built for hikers, not sightseers, and it removes the single hardest part of walking PR1 independently: getting back to a car that is parked at the other end of a one-way trail.

The Full Island Day, For Combining It With The East Coast

The Madeira East Tour at $41.90 puts Pico do Arieiro alongside the flat Balcões levada walk, Ribeiro Frio's laurel forest and Santana's thatched houses, in a single 7-hour day with hotel pickup. Good for travellers who want the summit view without a dedicated trip, and who would rather see several east-coast sights in one booked day than manage separate transport for each stop. The listing notes cloud can sometimes obscure the summit view, which it does not treat as grounds for cancelling the tour.
