Funchal Cable Car: One Way or Return

The Funchal-Monte cable car runs daily 08:45 to 17:45 with last boarding at 17:45. It closes only on 25 December. The ride takes 18 minutes over 3.2 km from the lower station beside the Old Town to Monte. Children 7 to 14 pay half, under 7 ride free. If a breakdown stops the return trip, ticket holders get other transport back or a 50% refund. The return ticket costs more than two cheap entries but less than the one-way fare plus a toboggan ride, so most people who plan to walk or sledge down buy one way. Full details in our cable car guide.

Monte Palace and the Toboggan: Buy in Person

Neither of these sells online. Monte Palace has no online ticket sale at all. You buy at the kiosk on arrival at the garden, paying with Multibanco, Visa, Mastercard or cash. Entry is $20.63 (€18) and includes the garden, a three-floor museum and a Moscatel tasting. Children up to 14 enter free with an adult. The garden opens 09:00 to 19:00 from April to September and 09:00 to 18:00 from October to March, last entry 17:00. The toboggan is the same story: no online booking, same-day on the spot only. It runs Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 18:00 and closes Sundays and public holidays. A sledge costs $34.38 (€30) for one rider, $45.84 (€40) for two and $68.76 (€60) for three. The ride ends in Livramento, a different place from the start, and there is no operator shuttle back to central Funchal, so budget for a taxi or bus after. More on both in our toboggan guide.

Tours That Bundle a Ticket

Three of the four most useful paid experiences in Funchal can be bought as part of a guided product, which fixes the price and the time in advance even where the operator itself takes no online booking. The Monte Palace tuk-tuk tour covers the garden and the hill, the toboggan tuk-tuk tour books you a sledge slot with hotel pickup, and the Old Town walking tour is the cheapest way into a wine lodge and the Jesuits' College. If your priority is the sea rather than the hill, the dolphin and whale watching cruise runs from the marina.

Which Funchal Tickets to Buy Ahead

Book Ahead

The cable car is the one Funchal attraction with a proper e-ticket. You buy it at madeiracablecar.com, it stays valid for 60 days, and it saves you the station queue on busy mornings. The tours work the same way. The Old Town walking tour at $18.84, the Monte Palace tuk-tuk tour at $57.43 and the toboggan tuk-tuk tour at $45.94 all give you a fixed departure time chosen at booking, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.

Blandy's Wine Lodge is not sold through a timed system published in our sources, but its tours run at set lengths from 30 minutes to 1h30, so booking ahead through its own site is sensible in high season.

Buy on Arrival

Monte Palace has no online ticket sale. The kiosk at the entrance takes Multibanco, Visa, Mastercard and cash, and entry is $20.63 (€18). The toboggan takes no online booking at all, only same-day payment at the rank, and closes Sundays and public holidays.

The CR7 Museum at $5.73 (€5) and the Madeira Botanical Garden at $11.46 (€10) both sell at the door, and the bathing complexes charge $6.88 (€6) at the gate, with the 7 to 17 age band at $2.29 (€2) and under 6 free with an adult. The Cabo Girão skywalk ticket, $5.73 (€5), is sold on site through the regional SIMplifica service. Nothing in this group needs a reservation, and none of the sources describes one.

The Madeira Story Centre sells its $5.73 (€5.00) ticket at its own door only.

Every price here is the seller's own, starting with Madeira Cable Car.
