Funchal Travel Tips: the Planning Hub

From the Airport: Aerobus or Metered Taxi

Cristiano Ronaldo Airport is in Santa Cruz, 19.1 km from Funchal by the city's own figure, about 17 minutes by car. The Aerobus is the cheap default. On board an adult ticket costs $7.68 (€6.70) and a child ticket $3.78 (€3.30).

Prepaid on a GIRO card it drops to $6.36 (€5.55). The route runs from the airport stop to Praia Formosa in 50 minutes end to end, reaching the Mercado stop at 22 minutes, Avenida do Mar at 24 minutes and the Lido on Estrada Monumental at 35 to 38 minutes. On weekdays buses leave the airport half-hourly from 08:30 to 12:00, then hourly from 13:00 to 22:00.

There is no service on 25 December. If you land outside those patterns, or you are four people with luggage, a taxi may cost little more between you. The flag fare is $4.58 (€4.00) by day and $5.50 (€4.80) at night, on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, after which the meter runs at $0.11 (€0.10) per 65 metres or 30 seconds in the day.

There is no fixed airport-to-city fare in the official 2026 convention. Any blog quoting a flat transfer price is inventing it. If you would rather have a fixed price agreed in advance, the Madeira Airport private transfer runs 24 hours a day and costs $39.60 per vehicle.

From the Cruise Pier: It Is Closer Than You Think, but Nobody Official Says How Close

Cruise ships berth at the Gare Marítima da Madeira on the Molhe da Pontinha, at the west end of the waterfront. The pier sits in the same stretch of coast as the Zona Velha and the old town, and most arriving passengers simply walk into the centre. Here is the honest part: APRAM, the port authority, publishes no official walking time or distance from the pier to the city centre.

A widely repeated third-party estimate puts it at around 15 minutes on foot, which matches the geography, but it is not an APRAM figure. In 2024 the port handled 316 ship calls and 728,604 passengers, so the walk is a well-trodden one. The Climate Numbers, Month by Month

Funchal has one of the mildest year-round climates in Europe. The figures below are the official IPMA climate normal for 1991 to 2020, recorded at the Funchal weather station at 58 m altitude. Rainfall is the number that should drive your choice: June, July and August are almost dry, while October through December together receive more rain than the rest of the year combined.

Even the wettest months average under 100 mm, spread across a handful of showers rather than grey weeks. Temperatures barely move: the average daily high ranges from 20°C in January to 26.8°C in August. For event planning, Carnival and the Flower Festival and the Atlantic Festival all fall inside the drier half of the year, and the Funchal events calendar lists their dates.

Monte Is a Different Climate

One correction that matters for planning: these numbers describe the coast. Monte, the hill district you reach by cable car, sits at about 550 m, and it is cooler and cloudier up there than the table suggests, often noticeably so on the same afternoon. No official climate normal exists for Monte or any other Madeira mountain station, so nobody can quote you exact figures, only the warning.

The Sunday Rule

Two of the city's best-known experiences shut on Sundays and public holidays. The Monte toboggan, the wicker sledge ride run by Carreiros do Monte, operates Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 18:00 and closes on Sundays. The Mercado dos Lavradores, the farmers' market, also closes on Sundays and public holidays, along with Saturday afternoons at 14:00.

If the sledge ride or the market are on your list, build them into a weekday or Saturday. The good news is that the big Sunday list is longer than the closed list: the Funchal-Monte cable car runs daily, Monte Palace Tropical Garden opens, the Sé cathedral welcomes visitors during its Sunday services windows of 07:15 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, and Blandy's Wine Lodge runs tours on Sundays from 10:00. The Fortress of São Tiago: a Genuine Conflict

The Fortress of São Tiago at the east end of the Zona Velha looks simple on paper and is not. The exterior and grounds are free to visit, that much is settled. But two official-adjacent sources give contradictory answers on the interior: one says Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 and free, another says Tuesday to Friday 09:30 to 17:30 with a €3 fee.

No single authoritative hours and fee page exists. Anyone who prints one confident line for this fortress is guessing. Treat the interior as a check-on-arrival item, enjoy the free sea-facing walls in the meantime, and read the detail on the São Tiago fort page.

The €2-a-Night Tax That Every Visitor Pays

Funchal charges a municipal tourist tax of $2.29 (€2) per person per night on every paid overnight stay in the municipality, in hotels and local accommodation alike, whatever booking channel you used. It has been in force since 1 October 2024 and was extended to cruise passengers from 1 January 2025. The cap is the part people miss: the tax stops after 7 consecutive nights, so the maximum is $16.04 (€14) per person per uninterrupted stay.

If a stay is interrupted and resumed, the count starts a new stretch. Free stays are exempt. A one-week holiday for two therefore carries up to $32.08 (€28) of tax on top of the room rate, usually collected by the property at check-in or check-out.

Note that this is Funchal's own scheme. Neighbouring municipalities run their separate €2 schemes under their own rules, so a stay outside the city limits is charged by that municipality's regulation, not Funchal's. The city council has opened a review that could raise the rate, so confirm the current figure on the official site before a long stay.

Honest Gaps in the Official Record

An independent guide should tell you where the published record runs out. Four things checked for this page could not be pinned down, and you should treat any confident figure you see elsewhere for them with suspicion.

• Bus 81 to Curral das Freiras exists and takes about 54 minutes over roughly 83 stops, but its exact fare and departure times were not confirmed from the operator's timetable, which could not be read in full.
• The airport distance itself disagrees between official sources: the city's own page says 19.1 km and about 17 minutes by car, while an airport-operator-adjacent figure says about 21 km and 18 minutes. The 2 km gap is real, not a typo.
• The Fortress of São Tiago's interior hours and fee genuinely conflict between two official-adjacent sources, free against €3 and two different weekly schedules. Only the free exterior and grounds are settled.
• The Mercado dos Lavradores closes on Sundays and opens at 07:00 on weekdays, but the two official sources disagree on the Friday closing time, one saying 19:00 and the other 20:00.
