Funchal Taxi: The Meter, the Ranks and Bolt

The Flag Fare and the Running Rate

The flag fare is $4.58 (€4.00) by day, defined as 06:00 to 21:00, and $5.50 (€4.80) at night and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. After the flag drops, the meter adds $0.11 (€0.10) for every 65 metres or 30 seconds during the day, and every 52 metres or 25 seconds at night, which is why a slow crawl through traffic costs more per kilometre than a clear run.

Waiting time is charged separately at $13.75 (€12.00) an hour by day and $16.51 (€14.40) an hour at night, and a luggage or pet supplement of $1.72 (€1.50) can apply. There is no fixed fare anywhere in this tariff for any specific route, including the run to or from the airport. If a driver offers you a flat number before starting the meter, that is a private arrangement, not the official rate, and you should agree it clearly before the car moves.

What to Do With No Fixed Fare

Ask for the meter to be started, or agree the price out loud before you get in. For a rough sense of what a ride should cost, work from the flag fare and the per-metre rate above rather than a number a blog quotes from a previous year. If you want price certainty booked in advance instead, the airport private transfer at a flat $39.60 removes the meter question entirely for that one trip.

No Fixed Rank List

Municipal notices name ranks at Avenida do Mar, Praca do Municipio, Largo do Phelps, Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo, Campo da Barca, Rua do Gorgulho and Avenida Luis de Camoes, but several of these have been temporarily relocated by more recent municipal editais, and no single current, authoritative list was confirmed for this page. Print a fixed street list here and it risks being wrong within a season, so treat the names above as where ranks have existed, not a guarantee of where one stands today.

The safest bets in practice are the main squares and the bus terminal, where taxis gather to meet arriving passengers even without a signposted rank. Praca do Municipio and Avenida do Mar are the two places most consistently named across the municipal notices we checked.

Hailing, Calling and Asking

A taxi can be hailed in the street when one passes with its light on, found waiting at the squares above, or booked by phone through your hotel or restaurant, which usually has a driver's number on hand. There is no confirmed island-wide radio-dispatch cooperative with its own public booking page for this page to name, so the practical route for a reliable pickup is to ask the front desk to call one for a specific time, rather than relying on a rank being where an old guide says it is.

Bolt Is Confirmed

Bolt's own Madeira city page lists ride categories Bolt, XL and Green, plus taxi options Taxi, Taxi XL and XXL Taxi, and states it offers rides to and from Madeira's airports. For the taxi categories booked through the app, the page says pricing is set by the taximeter based on distance, waiting time and supplements, the same tariff structure described above. The page prints no fixed fares or coverage map, so treat the in-app estimate as exactly that, an estimate.

Bolt operates in Madeira under Portugal's TVDE framework, which the region's own transport institute confirms is a regulated activity here. A 2024 Constitutional Court ruling struck down a fixed cap on TVDE vehicle numbers that used to apply regionally, so the legal picture for app-based rides in Madeira is settled and current.

Uber Is Not

Uber's own Portuguese ride page lists Lisboa, Porto, Coimbra, Albufeira, Braga, Aveiro, Leiria, Viseu, Covilha and Evora as its ride cities, and names Aeroporto da Madeira only among airport locations, not the city of Funchal itself. No statement on Uber's own site confirms city rides in Funchal. If you open the app expecting a ride, check what it actually offers at your location rather than assuming coverage, since the operator's own page does not claim it.

Airport to Funchal

No fixed taxi fare exists for the airport run, it runs on the same meter described above, so the price depends on traffic and the exact drop-off point. Visit Funchal's own distance figure is 19.1 km, about 17 minutes by car, though a separate airport-adjacent source puts it closer to 21 km and 18 minutes. Two published alternatives exist at a fixed price.

The Aerobus runs the full route for $7.68 (€6.70) on board or $6.36 (€5.55) on a GIRO card, in about 50 minutes end to end. A private airport transfer is bookable ahead for a flat $39.60, which removes both the meter and the schedule from the decision. Full detail on both is on Funchal airport.

Up to Monte

A taxi to Monte runs on the same city meter as any other ride, with no published flat fare for that route either. The cable car is the one officially timed and priced link to Monte, at $18.34 (€16.00) one way, running daily 08:45 to 17:45 except 25 December. Buses 20, 21, 22 and 48 also reach Monte on published fares.
