Quinta das Cruzes Museum

The Quinta das Cruzes Museum occupies a colonial-era manor house on Calcada do Pico, uphill from the cathedral, tradition says on the site of the house where Madeira's Portuguese founder Joao Goncalves Zarco once lived. Entry to the house is $11.46 (€10) for adults, but the surrounding garden and the cafe are free to enter whether or not you buy a museum ticket. The house runs Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-17:30, closed Sunday, Monday and public holidays. This page covers the price, the hours and the free part most visitors miss. The full Funchal city guide has the rest of the city.

Quick answer Price, hours, the free garden, in three lines

The Quinta das Cruzes house museum costs $11.46 (€10) for adults, ages 13-25 and 65+ pay $5.73 (€5), and it opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-17:30. The garden and the cafe are free to enter separately from the museum, any day the grounds are open.

Key takeaways

  • The garden and cafe cost nothing even without a museum ticket, so a visit does not have to hinge on the $11.46 (€10) entry fee
  • It is closed both Sunday and Monday, a two-day gap that also closes the cathedral's neighbour sights less often than this one
  • A small-group old town walking tour covers the wider uphill streets around the quinta if you want a guided read of the area

What the Quinta Is, and the Zarco Story Behind the Site

The Quinta das Cruzes is a former manor house, opened as a museum in December 1946, on a site tradition connects to Joao Goncalves Zarco, the Portuguese navigator credited with the 1420s settlement of Madeira, though the current house dates from later centuries and no physical trace of Zarco's original residence survives on the plot. The museum today shows decorative arts: furniture, silverware, glass, ceramics and Flemish and Portuguese paintings assembled from Madeiran manor houses, a domestic counterpart to the ecclesiastical collection at the Sacred Art Museum a few streets downhill. Stone architectural fragments and window surrounds recovered from demolished Funchal buildings are displayed in the garden itself.

Adult entry (ages 26-64) is $11.46 (€10). Ages 13-25 and seniors 65 and over pay $5.73 (€5), the same rate applies per person for groups of six or more, and a family ticket covering at least one adult and one child costs $20.63 (€18). The house opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-17:30 and is closed Sunday, Monday and public holidays, a wider gap than most sights in this part of the city, which tend to close only on Sunday.

There is no online ticket sale published. Admission is bought at the house.

The Free Part: Garden and Cafe Without a Ticket

The museum's own site states plainly that access to the garden and the cafeteria/restaurant is free of charge, independent of the house ticket. That makes the quinta one of the few paid sights in the centre with a genuinely free layer: a visitor can walk the subtropical garden, see the stone architectural fragments set into its walls, and stop at the cafe without paying the $11.46 (€10) entry fee for the house collection itself. It is worth checking the garden's own opening pattern separately, since a closed museum day does not necessarily mean a closed garden gate, though this page states only what mqc.madeira.gov.pt confirms: that the two are priced and accessed separately.

Where the Quinta Fits in a Day

The quinta sits uphill from the cathedral on Calcada do Pico, a steeper walk than the flat run of Avenida Arriaga, so it pairs naturally with a morning that also takes in the Sacred Art Museum a few streets below rather than a separate return trip. Because it closes both Sunday and Monday, plan it for a Tuesday-to-Saturday visit. A Sunday itinerary should skip straight to the garden-only option if the gate happens to be open, or route to a different sight entirely.
