Funchal Parking: The Two Named Car Parks and the Blue Lines

The Council's Own Notice

Funchal City Council's own announcement on ending free parking for green-tariff vehicles names the two car parks, '2000' and Campo da Barca, and describes both as running at near 100% occupancy. It also states the council runs more than 1,600 metered on-street spaces with time limits across the city. What the notice does not do is print an hourly, daily or overnight rate for either car park, or a per-hour rate for the on-street meters. No other page on funchal.pt found in this research supplies that number either.

The practical consequence: you cannot budget a Funchal parking cost from an official source before you arrive. Bring change or a card for the on-street meter and read the rate posted at the machine itself, and expect to circle for a space at '2000' or Campo da Barca given the near-full occupancy the council itself reports.

A Private Alternative, Not an Official One

Parclick, a third-party prepaid parking booking platform used across many European cities, states on its own Funchal page that it lists 3 bookable car parks in the city, without naming them on the page fetched for this research. It is one option for reserving a space ahead of arrival at a price set at booking, but it is not a council source and does not confirm or replace the two named municipal car parks above.

Until 18 July 2024, electric and hybrid vehicles carrying Portugal's green tariff plate parked free in Funchal's two named car parks, '2000' and Campo da Barca. From that date, the council ended free parking for those vehicles in the two car parks specifically, moving them onto the same rotativity system as any other vehicle, though the council's own wording does not supply the rate that now applies to them either.

What did not change is the on-street rule. Metered on-street spaces across the more than 1,600 the council runs stay free for green-tariff vehicles. So the practical split for an electric or hybrid rental in 2026 is: expect to pay like any other car inside '2000' or Campo da Barca, and expect to park free at a blue-line street space if you can find one, time limits still applying.

Zona Velha, the Se, the Mercado dos Lavradores and the Lido promenade sit within a compact, walkable stretch of the city, and none of them needs a parking space if you arrive on foot, by bus or by taxi. The cable car to Monte at $18.34 (€16.00) one way removes the need to find parking on that hill entirely, and a hop-on hop-off bus or tuk-tuk tour covers the seafront and viewpoints without a car at all. Save the parking question for the day you actually need a car, for a drive out of the city, and read car rental in Funchal for when that day makes sense.
